Keynote Larry Johnson, New Media Consortium

Seven Ways Technology is Unfolding, Everywhere We Look

After nearly a decade of tracking the evolution of emerging technology as part of the New Media Consortium’s Horizon Project, Johnson has uncovered seven clear patterns in the evolution of technology that can only be seen over time. While the technologies and practices highlighted in the many Horizon Reports published over this time are being implemented in ways that reflect local constraints and challenges, it is clear that these underlying patterns are at the heart of how learning, work, play are evolving worldwide and in every sector of education. Many of the things highlighted in past Horizon Reports have already become quite commonplace and are integrated into everyday activities; others are still unfolding, converging and morphing along with parallel developments that are pushing them in one direction or another. While the currents and eddies of emerging technology are complex, it is clear that what the Horizon Project has been detailing are developments fueled by these seven profound channels of change. Join project founder Larry Johnson as he outlines the pathways of innovation and technological evolution that he believes are deeply impacting how we think about our world, and how we teach, learn, create, and even communicate.

ICT in Education – A New Zealand Perspective

New Zealand launched its first ICT strategy for schools in 1998, and since that time there has been a steady level of support for a range of activities supporting the use of ICT in schools, including an ICT PD cluster programme, an online portal for schools, and a teacher laptop programme. This presentation will provide an overview of these activities as they have been implemented in the context of self-managed schools, and summarize key lessons learned from the research over this time. The presentation will also outline some of the current challenges and future directions for ICT in schools in New Zealand.

Wimmera Virtual School - Blended Curriculum Provision for Improved Student Outcomes

Wimmera Virtual School (WVS) has launched into a new era of curriculum provision with the installation of video conferencing infrastructure from the commencement of the 2009 school year, and delivery of Physics, Psychology, Mathematical Methods, Chemistry and Physical Education. WVS is a component of a pilot of rural curriculum provision across Loddon Campaspe and Grampians regions. WVS’s innovative Blended Curriculum Provision model also includes traditional face to face instruction, digitised (recorded) audio and video instructional material, video conference lessons and/or special purpose podcasts and vodcasts, an Online Learning Management System using the Moodle software package for 24/7 access, and personal conferencing technologies. A key feature of the success so far of WVS is its collaborative protocol, and focus on building the capacity of students and teachers to embrace the new technology. An extension of the project is exploration of the blended provision across the P-10 years.

Attracting students to ICT Study and Careers – Teachers/Careers Advisers Role

Many factors influence young people’s decisions on course and career pathways, with teachers and careers advisors playing an important role. The majority of young people do not consider ICT as a career option, yet the technology sector is growing rapidly and globally generating A$26.2 billion gross annual revenue. As companies need to work smarter in tough economic times, young people with technology skills are in demand. Danni will provide an outline of the Victorian Government’s ICT skills initiatives aimed at increasing the number of skilled ICT workers in Victoria – such as the successful ICT: Start Here. Go Anywhere careers awareness campaign and plans for continuing the campaign in 2010. Danni will also outline how you can help to support the campaign and get the message across to inspire students to pursue the diverse and exciting opportunities an ICT career can provide.

Rural School Leadership and e-Learning–making a difference

It is one thing to have innovative e-learning tools to transform and revolutionize learning butit is often another to actually make this revolution happen within a traditional, structured education environment. Sound leadership and change management skills are often key to support and implement the use of e-learning programs and foster transformation.
Anecdotal evidence collected from school leaders and teachers in rural government schools in the Eyre & Western Region of South Australia by the DECS Learning Technologies group is demonstrating how e-learning is delivering benefits to schools by improving efficiency, attendance and supporting personalisation. The role that leaders in these schools are taking is closely linked to the success of the e-learning program design, development and implementation. The session will include a ‘live’ videoconference link to leaders in rural South Australian schools.

2:30pm
Dale Pearce, Principal, Bendigo Senior Secondary School, Victoria

Virtual Learning - A Victorian Pilot

Bendigo Senior Secondary College is conducting a 2-year online learning project which is being jointly sponsored by DEECD and Multimedia Victoria and spans both the Loddon Mallee and Grampians Regions. The project seeks to establish 'proof of concept' for a mode of online delivery based around the use of Web 2.0 tools which will result in the provision of senior curriculum to a range of external locations, including those where teacher shortages or small student numbers threaten curriculum breadth for students.
A team of staff have worked full time on the project in 2009 and will commence delivery to trial sites in 2010. This presentation will share the key learning from the project and the prospects for online delivery in the current Australian context. It will also include a perspective on contemporary school based online learning models from the USA.

Cybersafety: How real are the risks and what can we do to reduce them?

ACMA has developed a wide range of free resources to support schools with the implementation of cybersafety programs. These include a new cybersafety web site, curriculum resources for all year levels, multimedia content to educate students and full day accredited professional development programs for educators.
This session will provide school leaders with an overview of the major cybersafety issues affecting schools and the emerging trends in internet usage which are causing schools to rethink their policies, procedures and strategies relating to on-line and mobile phone issues.
The session will cover key cybersafety issues including student cyberbullying, teacher cyberbullying, the use of social networking site including Facebook by students and teachers, the sharing of inappropriate images by mobile phones and the need to have appropriate strategies to deal with these issues.
